Who Are We?

Mattsays was inspired by a simple question that occurred one day while visiting a large Australian wine retailer. How would I – or anyone else – possibly choose from the thousands of bottles of wine on offer?

I realised this question probably wasn’t unique. So I started wondering if I could create a way to combine all the critical variables of price and quality to help make a rational shopping decision.

What started out as a simple retail insight became a 10-year journey exploring the wine show system, the 30-40,000 scores it produces each year, the 14,000 different labels we see exhibited at wine shows each year and the thousands of producers who submit their wines for judging.

Along the way we compared the scores to critics’ scores, regressed retailers prices against scores and built a database of more than 41,000 different labels. And it’s still growing.

Assessment of wine quality is ultimately subjective. However we are passionate believers in the collective power of many minds to arrive at the right answer. By processing as many expert scores as we can find, we think Mattsays provides the most objective, wide-ranging and reliable guides to wine in Australia and NZ.
